MRS. NAHA: THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF POLITICAL PARTY IN TH ARAB WORLD

Statement of Mrs. Naha Bint Mouknass

To the United Nations 51 Commission on Women Status

New York : March 2 , 2007

Ladies and gentelmen,

I am honored and pleased to address this worldwide honorable gathering working on the global advancement of women. I am grateful to our partner of women empowerment , the NGO Terre Vivante for its kind invitation to attend , a dear wish that I could not make unfortunately due to  the lates African Summit in France and the ongoing Presidential Elections at home. The sure thing is that I am there with you . You are all in my heart . If I am obliged to stay home, it will for you and our common issues. We have to stand as one voice to be heard at the world events. It is time to say no and no and no to violence as you used to say for the last decades. It is time to end violence against our mothers , it is time to condamn any discrimination against our little sisters . We are still fighting from Beijin to the 51 Commission and will continue in the coming events to defy the challenges, open opportunities for our betterment and learn from your great experience. please allow me to ensure you that your party, the union for democracy and progress , UDP is greatly appreciating the commission agenda priority theme of the 2007 , the Elimination of all Forms of Fiscrimination and Violence against the girl child and the important review topic on the role of men and boys in promoting gender equality to be the fabric of education and social norms, as you put it.

It is terribly painful to learn that around the world(at least one woman in every three, according to issues in World Health ) has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. Most often the abuser is a member of her own family. Increasingly, gender‑based violence is recognized as a major public health concern and a violation of human rights . We in the UDP party are catergorically against any forms of physical or psycholgical violence or discrimination. We have to bring home the good news of your promises to get the 50 percent represenation , a  happy dream that we like to enjoy living in Mauritania, in Africa and the world at large for the full respect of women and girls human rights. We will be the voice and eyes of your front line battle in Mauritania and the sub-region. Thank you so much for leading women solidarity and prosperity for a better world for all of us.
